How we automated the informational tour of the stations at Parroquia El Calvario (San Salvador) with NFC cards that take each visitor straight to the right video — no app required.

Parroquia El Calvario, in San Salvador, has around 12 stations and altars inside the church. Traditionally, explaining the meaning of each one to visitors depended on the priest or an assistant being available to guide the tour in person. They came to us with a simple question: how can any visitor, local or foreign, access that information on their own, without losing the character of the place? The answer didn't need artificial intelligence — it was physical-digital automation with NFC cards.

The challenge: visitor autonomy, without relying on an app

A QR code would have worked, but the parish wanted something more durable and with a more polished experience inside a historic space. The solution had to be something visitors could use instantly with their own phone, with nothing to install, and that the parish's own team could maintain without needing technical knowledge.

How it works: tap your phone and go

Each station or altar has a personalized NFC card, made of PVC and sublimated with its own design. Visitors just need to tap their NFC-compatible phone against the card, and it automatically redirects them to that station's informational video — no scanning, no typing a URL, no app to open.

Why this is automation, not artificial intelligence

Worth clarifying: this project doesn't use artificial intelligence in how it works — it's physical-digital automation. NFC technology simply redirects to a link configured ahead of time; it doesn't interpret language, answer questions, or make decisions. It's the same principle behind a QR-code digital menu, applied through a different physical medium (a card instead of a sign) and built for a space where the visitor's physical experience matters as much as the information itself.

The result

Today, a visitor to Parroquia El Calvario can walk through the stations at their own pace and access the explanatory content for each one just by tapping their phone — with no need for someone to guide them in that moment. The parish still owns all the content (the videos live wherever they choose to host them); the cards are simply the entry point.
